Press Release for Newspapers (national, local, school, etc)

East Coast Middle School Leadership Institute: How Local Students Make A Big Impact

For students from Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Maryland, learning and laughing does not stop at the end of the school year. They will be traveling to Pine Point School in Stonington, Connecticut to learn hands-on methods to study and protect our environment with the Global Youth Leadership Institute (GYLI).

Students and faculty at the Middle School Leadership Institute will engage together in fun, active, hands-on activities that build leadership skills. Participants will be introduced to the ideas of race, culture, and religion, and the role that these ideas play in the formation of personal identity. Beyond this multi-cultural experience, the program will focus on basic environmental issues. They will participate in water quality testing in Long Island Sound, astronomical observatories at Pine Point School, and volunteer activities to clean up and maintain coastal areas. The capstone of the institute will be a day of sailing on the schooner Argia. At the end of this five-day program, students and teachers will create Leader Learning Plans, which will help them to become leaders in the process of creating sustainable change in their schools and local communities at home.
